Another difference is that NSPanels don’t become ‘main’. The primary effect of 
this is that the frontmost document (i.e. non-panel) window will still have its 
menu commands activated. I think this used to be a bigger deal in the old 
NeXTSTEP UI, but this feature is still useful.
