You're confusing CAScrollLayer (Core Animation) with NSScrollView. I *think* that NSScrollVIew's visible rect changes when the scroll bars are shown/hidden. That would stand to reason. Basing the size of some content on the visible rect sounds like a bad idea - you might sometimes use this to determine what parts of your content to draw or not draw, but not to determine what the content itself is.
