It seems a bit off-topic, but: what special characters do you mean? Those that are used within the i18n samples?
Usually it is just a matter of the keyboard layout that you setup within your operating system. If you need to access all of Unicode within your editor, without switching your system keyboard layout, there is UniPad, a nice Unicode Text Editor; it's free for non-commercial use: see http://www.unipad.org/ A question that you might ask also: how to save your file as UTF-8? It might seem obvious- but if you use Windows Notepad for instance, you won't be able to save a file to UTF-8; it will save to your system encoding! (cf. XSL FAQ link below). You need a text editor which is UTF-8 aware; as Peter mentionned it, if it isn't, well, consider replacing it or switching your file encoding to match the one of your system.
