*shrug* it's hardly portable if it doesn't exist on Solaris, which is one

I had missed the version reported in your original complaint.  I haven't
yet been examining or compiling u2.10.12, so I don't really have anything
to say on this point.  I suspect the daemonization was either accidentally
removed due to changes to start-up code or deliberately removed for
testing purposes.  In either case, it'll certainly be back before .12
comes anywhere near beta.
