Brad Schoening commented on CASSPYTHON-29:
------------------------------------------
On removing APPLICATION_NAME: a canonical key is valuable in a way that
free-form keys aren't. In a managed-service environment with hundreds of
clusters, operators need to query and aggregate connections by application
across every cluster, and that only works if every client reports under the
same key.
With a canonical key:
* APPLICATION_NAME = 'nightly-etl'
* APPLICATION_NAME = 'reporting-svc'
With arbitrary keys, the same information drifts across teams:
* APPLICATION_NAME = 'nightly-etl'
* APPLICATION = 'reporting-svc'
* APP = 'batch-B'
* APLICATION_NAME = 'nightly-validator'
The second set can't be reliably queried, alerted on, or used in dashboards.
One typo and a client silently disappears from the view.
This is also well-established practice. PostgreSQL has a standard
`application_name` connection parameter that appears in `pg_stat_activity`, and
the Cassandra Java driver already sends `APPLICATION_NAME` and
`APPLICATION_VERSION`. Adopting the same key in the Python driver follows an
existing convention.
> Allow user to specify arbitrary parameters for STARTUP message

> Modify the driver to allow sending arbitrary STARTUP message options.
> Proposed design:
> - Add `extra_startup_options` param to Cluster constructor.
> - Thread it through Cluster -> connection setup (cluster.py) ->
> StartupMessage.
> - Define clear precedence/conflict behavior when duplicate/conflicting
> options are passed into the StartupMessage constructor.
> *Note:*
> This Jira was originally created for sending the client's application name
> and version as `APPLICATION_NAME` /
> `APPLICATION_VERSION` options in the STARTUP message, which is tied to the
> now-defunct DataStax Insights offering.
> Since the Java driver (5.0.0) and eventually C/C++ driver (3.0.0) are
> removing withApplicationName()/withApplicationVersion() entirely, this ticket
> has been updated.
