Review Comment:
   `ensureTlsTrustStore()` mutates the process environment (`setenv`), which
can race with other threads concurrently calling `getenv`/`setenv` (POSIX does
not guarantee safety for concurrent environment mutation/reads). If
`VeloxBackend::init` can run after other threads are started, consider guarding
the environment mutation with `std::call_once` and documenting/calling this at
a guaranteed single-threaded point during process startup.

Review Comment:
   `defaultCaFile` and `defaultCaDir` are hard-coded as “OpenSSL defaults”, but
OpenSSL’s compiled defaults can differ depending on how it was built (including
vcpkg configuration). To make this robust and self-documenting, consider
deriving the defaults from OpenSSL APIs at runtime (e.g.,
`X509_get_default_cert_file()` / `X509_get_default_cert_dir()` and related
`_env` accessors) and using those values in `systemTlsSearchPaths()` (or using
them to initialize `paths`).

Review Comment:
   `setenv`’s return value is ignored. If `setenv` fails (e.g., ENOMEM), TLS
will still fail but the code will have logged success. Consider checking the
return code and logging an error (or failing initialization) when exporting
`SSL_CERT_FILE` fails.
