Seems like a version of the patch that only added the ifs statements when 
needed (when the log argument is not a constant string) would be a nice middle 
ground since it addresses both the performance and code readability concerns, 
and does not require a lot of effort. I think we should implement 
Konstantin/Doug's proposal in a separate jira and make forward progress on this 
one.
