Sadly I was away on vacation when this flurry of activity happened, or I might
have been able to avoid a lot of unnecessary hassle. 

This entire bug is based on a misunderstanding of how XPath works and is
expected to work.The new methods added are a bug, not a feature. JXPath was
working correctly before, and is now potentially nonconformant to the XPath
specification.  

These changes should be backed out. They are unnecessary and they encourage
people to misunderstand and misuse XPath. They make it nearly impossible to
process a document that uses both prefixed attributes and elements in a default
namespace.
