I really like this refactoring. People like Laura should track the changes we make and rewrite their own client to either use or extend the HttpClient class. For the long run I think nobody should go without the HttpClient class. HttpClient should act a bit like a facade.
However as mentioned earlier this refactoring should not go into the code base until 2.0 has been released. To make your life easier for you we could create a branch in CVS:
- Create 2.0 Branch early (perhaps on 2.0 Beta): use this branch to check in bug fixes and release 2.0
- on the trunk:
do the refactoring and merge back bug fixes from branch when appropriate.
(Don't do it the other way round.)
