the best place to start is by reading the information already on the site. see http://jakarta.apache.org/site/getinvolved.html and pages linked to it. it explains how we manage our projects and some of the apache philosophy. IMHO we're a little less directed than some other places. it's more about people scratching their personal itches than some great uber-plan for world domination. i personally think that documentation patches (both user documentation and java docs)are a great way to understand a project. once you've found a project you find interesting - try to improve the documentation. not only will you learn about how the project works but you'll also earn the thanks of the developers. the other great way to learn a project is to hang out on the users list and try to provides answers to user questions. you'll be amazed how much you can learn yourself by answering questions - especially if you need to find out the answer! once you understand a project then take a look at the to do list and see if there's anything that interests you. if there is, post to the list volunteering to provide patches. if there's nothing that you find interesting on the to do list - then propose something new that you do find interesting! or go and find another project doing more interesting stuff! BTW you'll need to subscribe the commons-dev list if you want to contribute code. it's a good idea to subscribe for a little while so that you get a feel for the netiquette before you post. - robert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For additional commands, e-mail: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
