Laurie, The privileged, white folks (old and young) who get all in a huff about Starbucks everytime they see the name - making signs of the cross, like they are seeing Dracula fer chrissakes, in all frankness, amuse me, from my perspective as an old left, union shop steward, labor socialist.
Understand that as a kid in the second grade, that when I heard the name Abraham Lincoln, I thought the whole name was Abraham Lincoln Brigade. What I see now in those much reviled Starbucks joints, which are alas, non-union, a work force that does have medical and dental benefits after a fashion - something that the old mom and pops never had. Trust me, I know - I worked for alot of "Mom & Pops" coming up. It's what motivated me to become a Restaurant Union Shop Steward and Negotiating Team Delegate. Starbucks, incidentally, seemed to be the coffee cup of choice of most of my fellow marchers last Sunday at the Women's Pro-Life rally in Washington, DC, judging from the detrius in the trashcans on the Mall.
