North Devon Gazette & Advertiser, UK Garden for community 19 January 2005
DISUSED allotment land at East-the-Water, Bideford, is to be leased to a local charity to provide horticultural training for its special needs members and to create a community garden project. Bideford Town Council has agreed to lease the uncultivated land at the upper end of the Pollyfield Allotments to the Jigsaw Project at a peppercorn rent. Jigsaw spokeswoman Kim Edwards said they were hoping to work with the East-the-Water community in a garden project to provide special areas for children, for dog walking and for the elderly. The project would also enable the charity to expand its services to clients with learning difficulties, those recovering from alcohol or substance abuse, young offenders and others. Jigsaw, which is one of a number of projects under the North Devon Housing Society umbrella, operates from Mill Road in Barnstaple. It currently provides a service of recycling furniture to help people on low incomes, with their own members helping in restoration, repairs and picture framing, assisted by skilled volunteers. They also had a small allotment in Barnstaple and were in the long term looking to expand their gardening services, said Kim. "We are always looking for volunteers who can help pass on their skills for a few hours each week," she said. ______________________________________________________ The American Community Gardening Association listserve is only one of ACGA's services to community gardeners.
