The PDA is landlord to over 170 craftspeople, 120 farmers, dozens of performers and 275 residential tenants including low income and elderly, and approximately 225 year-round commercial businesses in 12 buildings.
POSITION SUMMARY: The primary responsibilities of the Farm Program Coordinator are to coordinate the PDA Farm Program, serving as the link between the PDA and farmers who sell at the Market and to work as a team member with the Market Basket CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program and the Daystall farm/ craft team performing Market Master duties. The primary goal is to ensure that the Pike Place Market continues to fulfill its historic mission as a working farmers market that provides an opportunity for Washington farmers to sell directly to local consumers. To fulfill this mission, the Farm Program Coordinator acts as an advocate for the Market and undertakes recruitment and support activities to help growers establish and maintain direct-marketing businesses at the Market. These activities include outreach efforts to attract new growers, compliance efforts, program development, and technical/marketing support for farmers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: · Recruit and support Market farmers, administer permit applications for all new and returning farmers, maintain the PDA Farm Program database, orient qualified farmers in the participation in the Market Fresh and WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Programs, assist with the planning and implementation of technical assistance and educational activities for Market farmers and serve as a farmer advocate. · Enforce Daystall rules and regulations through inspections of new Market farmers and periodic re-inspections of current farmers to ensure that all permit holders are in compliance with PDA Daystall rules and regulations, coordinate enforcement action as necessary to ensure compliance, and maintain close communication with all Market farmers through frequent conversation and daily inspection of products on farm tables. · Plan and coordinate various events to enhance the daily farm table operation, such as Organic Farmer Days, Summer Sundays, chef's demos, produce tastings, and other events designed to increase farmers' sales. Communicate with farm permit holders to keep all informed of special events, promotional or educational opportunities and other relevant Market matters. · Work as a team member with the Pike Place Market day stall management and CSA program as follows: perform Market Master farm and crafts table assignment duties, provide backup for the Market Master as needed, assist with planning the annual PDA Farm Program budget, submit monthly variance reports, prepare and distribute annual report on the status of Farm Program, serve as lead staff liaison with the Farm Committee, plan Farmer Forums, and represent the PDA with the Washington Farmers Market Association, maintain a travel log and submit a monthly trip report to position supervisor, and submit detailed monthly report of activities and accomplishments. · Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: · HS Diploma required; college coursework or equivalent; · Knowledge of farming and farm produce marketing experience; · Self-directed and team-oriented; good judgment and problem solving skills; · Excellent communication skills and ability to work with and among diversity of people; · General computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Out look, Excel, Word and Access; · Valid WSDL; and · Willing to work weekends and variable hours. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is performed in an office setting which is non-smoking, not air-conditioned or filtered, and subject to temperature variances due to western exposure and non-centralized heating system as well as working outdoors with the daystall community. Work environment is fast-paced and requires the ability to work under pressure. Casual dress is the standard. Work hour flexibility and ability to work weekends to support the daystall community and the 7-day week Market operation. Job requires the ability to lift or carry 50 pounds, effectively use computer terminals, terminal keyboard, telephone system and operate a 2-way radio. Compensation Grade 11 / $29,411--$32,448 Hire In Range (DOE). Range: $29,411--$43,521.
