Connie,
Please check out the Start-Up Guide we have at the top of our webpage at
www.gardenworksMN.org/Resources/coordinating.htm. We loved the start-up
guide developed by Common Ground Community Garden Program (Yvonne Savio)
and adapted it (credited on the guide), adding forms, templates, samples
to help with the process of starting a community garden.
In starting one, give yourself time to plan and really get community
involvement. There is also a one-page basics on the webpage that gives
an overview of the process and what you can expect. I can't say it
strongly enough, quick-starting a community garden without proper
preparation and involvement will often end in heartache and backache and
bad moral. Gardens not properly maintained or integrated with their
communities can give the whole movement a blackeye - planning and
involvement are the keys to avoiding this outcome. In my part of the
world, we are currently inundated with requests to connect to a garden
or start one. The time is now and interest is strong for community
gardens, it's important to make sure that every existing garden is an
asset its community.
My five cents... :-) Warmest wishes and good luck to you! It's
definitely an activity with long-lasting and wonderful rewards! Kirsten

I live in Cary, NC and to my knowledge there are a few gardens in my
area, but none I could join, due to age or where I live. I would prefer
to join an established one, or would start one but would love help
and/or advice. Please let me know in either case if you can help me.
I kind of sort of have my eye on a site in my area, but what now?
Thanks,
Connie
