*Of Fire Hydrants* I have a couple of questions in regards to using water from fire hydrants for inner-city gardening. The garden that we're setting up is located next door to a low-income health clinic and is willing to let us 'borrow' water - but it's at an inconvenient location and would require many many feet of hose - while we have a fire hydrant on our property of the garden. So if you have any experience working with the city for fire hydrant use - please let us know. Especially if you have any model policies or sample ordinations coordinated through the city/water department.
Specific questions: - Did you have to obtain a permit from the city (council, mayor) or fire department? - How (if so) did you go about obtaining a permit? - Physically speaking, what sort of hook-up/attachment arrangement did you use in order to use water from a fire hydrant? - Are others in the city allowed to use fire hydrants in a similar fashion - for watering gardens? - How is water use monitored? By whom? *Of Fertilizers* We're also hoping to find a good store brand organic fertilizer to promote to folks doing vegetable gardening in the city. On the farm we mix our own - but that's not typically convenient for regular backyard garden types. So if you have any recommendations for organic fertilizers - relative cost schemes and analysis of their N-P-K content - please pass that info along.
