Hi, all,
Well, I read Ellen's post very fast, preoccupied by dog and teenagers, and my
brain processed "habitat gardens" - as in birdies and butterflies. So...off
list, I sent her a contact for a friend who does that here in Charlotte. But,
oh...you mean habitat _for humanity_ gardens! OK...
Duh...
Somebody (Mary T. Haque in landscape architecture and colleagues?) at Clemson
actually did a Habitat House with a food garden component in the landscaping a
few years back - I'm not sure how it turned out, though. I can't find much
googling, unfortunately. It may still exist, to go look at.
Like Fred's experience in Atlanta, Charlotte's Habitat program and community
gardens haven't always cooperated very well, so I'm very happy to hear of the
change in Winston-Salem. At one point here, Habitat actually shut down a
thriving garden so they could build a house, then never started the project.
Maybe Keith Baldwin or somebody at NCAT could help?
I personally think there's great potential in edible landscaping in low income
housing, but it is a hard sell here - people haven't done it, so no one will do
it. Some sponsors and funders stare at you as though you're totally whacked out
if you even mention the idea. But if I can say "they've done it elsewhere, up
in Winston-Salem..." there's more hope.
