you may have a student, or know one, who may be willing to do a science
fair experiment. for example, you may want onions. but if you plant bulbs you
may be planting new pests and diseases of onions , or diseases of other
plants. so you may want to fence off a plot for onions only.... second. you
can visit garage sales and buy pots, soak them in water with bleach, and drain
dry. buy potting soil. plant onion seeds, search every seed company rack
...
third experimental. many things are killed by bathroom hot water which may be
130 degres f... you may need thermometers. put some water on the stove to
boil. set out some coffee cups with one onion bulb in each cup. put bath water
into one cup, one hour; add a little boiling water to thermometer in a cup
with bath water , say 140 f; add cold water to another say 120 f, soak one
hour and plant in labelled pots. if the hottest do not grow, they may be dead.
repeat temp soak of living onions , perhaps shorter or longer time, or small
differences in temp.

ps. you may see signs plants for sale. you may buy tomato plants, cabbage
etc. and add new pests and diseases to your garden. but now is feb. plenty
early to start cabbage and tomato seeds in potting soil in pots, in windows or
under a fluorescent bulb... seed more than you need for the garden, sell some,
give as gifts;;; or if you have a young scientist, she can determine lethal
temperatures and times... and safe high temp baths for plants with roots.
transplant heat-treated plants to more potting soil in labelled pots.. take
photos....
