After my parents and I got sick from eating bad lettuce, we started asking how restaurants clean their lettuce. Many use bagged and just dump it into a bowl. Others use Victory, a natural chemical wash to kill the germs. Another told us to rinse lettuce and other veggies in a salt water and lemon mixture - and then rinse very well. So that is what I do. The salt and acid are natural.
And one note about the FDA. I participated in a conference call last year with a member of congress, an educator and a representative from the FDA. The guy from the FDA said precautions are in place to ensure bagged lettuce is safe. The very next day hundreds of students at Michigan State University got sick from eating bagged lettuce. There is room for improvement with the FDA. We do not live in a sterile world and never will. The AMA says do not use the solutions that say "kills 99.9999% of the germs". Our bodies must get use to the germs or they will kill us. Washing off vegetables with water does nothing but wash off the soil. It will not wash off germs nor chemicals. Because I have never tried to live in a sterile invironment, I go to Mexico and Central America and drink the tap water and never get sick. Others drink bottled water and all get sick.
