If you have clay that is so aged you could make pottery out of it I would look 
for a more hospitable soil.  Where I am, Is  an area with lime induced iron 
chlorisois. Lots of clay too.  I would advise nobody under those conditions to 
add any form or shape of calcium to their soils. Your soils are already too 
alkaline, probably. Calcium would only make it more alkaline. Consider the pH 
before adding calcium. Just add organic matter, let your friends that live in 
the soil do what they like to do and forget adding this and that. Unless you 
think you can improve on nature. Use natures ways. And besides, its cheaper!
