Hi all, I posted a while back about Farming Concrete<http://farmingconcrete.com/about/>- a project to quantify food production in NYC community gardens, when we were first calling for interns and participants. With a summer team of 25 volunteer researchers, we're in full swing, and have a lot to announce!
Much has happened since we had our first meeting<http://farmingconcrete.com/2010/06/04/launch/>on June 3. We've traversed neighborhoods in dozens of neighborhoods on foot, bike, bus, and subway every day, including evenings and weekends. We met loads of inspiring gardeners<http://farmingconcrete.com/2010/07/12/ms-betty/>, and scored an article in the Wall Street Journal<http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2010/06/10/fertile-grounds-sizing-up-nycs-garden-harvest/>. As of last week, we've also distributed almost all of our 100 scales<http://farmingconcrete.com/2010/07/16/100-scales-are-out/>, and nearly 300 community gardeners are beginning to track their harvests (!!). *Get your garden on the map* If we haven't yet reached your garden and you'd like to get going tracking your harvest, please email [email protected] and we'll get on it right away! *Please consider a small contribution* With demand so high and such a successful participation rate, we need to order more scales! Please consider a small contribution<http://farmingconcrete.com/donate/>to our entirely volunteer-run project - $16 buys a scale, and goes a long way toward preserving community-run green spaces! New York Restoration Project has pledged $1,000 if we can raise $1,000, and we're well on our way toward achieving this goal, with $224 raised as of this morning. We're also looking for $1,000+ donors to help take our project to the next level - please contact me ([email protected]) for more info. *Help us map gardens<http://farmingconcrete.com/2010/07/13/how-mapping-works/>in your neighborhood * One of the most important aspects of this project is measuring areas under production. Each map takes 1-3 hours, depending on the size of the garden. If you have a few hours to spare one evening or weekend this month or next, please email [email protected] with your availability and preferred neighborhood(s). No experience necessary! This is a great excuse to spend time in NYC's amazing community gardens, and you're guaranteed to learn a ton about urban agriculture and community-managed green space. All you need is a measuring tape and a sheet of paper. *Intern <http://farmingconcrete.com/volunteer/> for Farming Concrete this fall* We're currently on the hunt for folks who can commit 10 hours/week September-December. Interns will map gardens and maintain contact with gardeners who are weighing their produce, as well as enter data from completed harvest logs. Hours are flexible and bilingual is a plus. If you're interested, please send a resume and cover letter to [email protected] Happy gardening!
