We put up a wooden pole with a cross bar on top to make allow hawks to hunt in 
our garden more conveniently. They are more likely to hunt where they can 
perch.  I've not seen hawks use it, but maybe owls use it at night when I'm not 
looking.  We used spare wood that a neighbor was throwing out, so no trees were 
harmed in the experiment.  While I haven't seen evidence that this works, I 
like the theory so much that I recommend it.
