Some great tips have been shared, but everyone seems to have missed two problems that aphids may indicate. One is over fertilization, particulary with nitrogen and phosphorous, and the other is over watering. The aphid population will sometimes explode if both occur.
I wish that I could find my references on the above. I know that I have seen the research. Here in Florida, where we are rumored to have severe bug and pest problems, I have not had that much of an aphid problem. Fire ants are a diffeeremt story, but using organic ant baits tend to be helping with the control. (That said, I'll probably step directly on a hill tomorrow and end up with 100 or so bites.)
