Hi Marilyn I use a Hav a Heart trap for squirrels baited with a piece of apple and some peanut butter or some plain peanuts, it is safe around children and doesn't harm the squirrels. You will have to relocate the squirrel, I read they should be taken 7-10 miles away, to insure they don't return to your garden. I don't have any remedy for gopher's we don't have any in Brooklyn NY
