Community gardening program opens new site in Clifton MONDAY, JULY 25, 2011 By HARVY LIPMAN RECORD COLUMNIST
City Green is growing. The Wyckoff non-profit that promotes urban community gardens and runs educational programs in schools across North Jersey last week officially opened its newest venture: a 5-acre farm in Clifton. "We're already growing food there," said Jennifer Papa, the group's executive director. "We'll have a children's garden. We host five high school interns from Clifton. We're marketing some of the produce at the Clifton farmer's market." City Green actually began cultivating a 1-acre plot of the property in April. A month earlier it entered into a five-year lease with the city, which bought the former Schultheis Farm on Grove Street six years ago as part of an effort to retain a small bit of the farmland that once dominated the Clifton landscape. "There was a time before World War II when Clifton was mostly farms," said Mayor James Anzaldi. "This grew out of the desire of the municipal council to preserve at least one of the farms...
