I recently wrote an article about creating resident gardens for affordable
housing sites for the *Assisted Housing Management Insider*, with help of a
number of sources around the country, including several on this listserv,
with much gratitude. The *Insider* is a national plain English "how-to"
publication, giving advice to owners and managers of
low-income/federally-subsidized
and public housing (Section 8 project-based, Section 202, Section 236, Tax
Credit, NYCHA/PHA, HOPE 6 and other federally regulated sites) on complying
with complicated housing regulations as well as working tools for managing
their properties effectively. The story is very much geared toward these
owners and managers, not the more savvy food system and gardening advocates
in this group. Indeed, the subject matter is generally outside of the
publication's usual content, which is why they used an outside editor. So
it is almost a primer for those with little knowledge about food issues and
gardening for starting and managing a resident community gardening project
at affordable housing sites, though the article makes clear that the site
should partner with community organizations who have the gardening
knowledge and resources--several of the sources in the article are those
types of community partners.

Click here <http://blog.nycfoodscape.com/?p=1508>for an excerpt with a
link to the publisher for the full story. The publication is generally for
paid subscribers only, but the editor unlocked the gardening story online
for public view because she thought it would have a wide audience beyond
existing subscribers, including opening up the idea of gardening to people
who haven't considered it before, and so it would be a good marketing tool
for getting site owners and managers to subscribe and for others to use.

Feel free to share the link and repost/use. I think you can print, though I
don't know if you can download a PDF or not. And there are also links on
the publisher's site once you click through for model tools, including
model garden rules and a model survey for residents and site staff.

Best,

 Carolyn Zezima
