Dear Sandy,
It's been a while since I've been in touch. I hope you and yours have been
well. My family and I have been enjoying a bountiful growing season here in
Maine.

I'm writing today to ask you to do three things that could help thousands of
disadvantaged and vulnerable people also enjoy the benefits of food gardens,
but before I do, a little bit of background information is needed. Thank you
for taking the time to read all the way to bottom of this message.

American entrepreneur, Derek Sivers, gave a brilliantly entertaining TED talk
about how to start a movement which shows a young man inspiring a large group
of initially inhibited people to get up and dance at an outdoor concert. It's
one of the best short talks you'll ever
see<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=c49836318f&e=c7895a9537>.
Credit for movement building often goes to a single leader, but Sivers rightly
points out the critical leadership role played by the first followers in a
movement. As he puts it so well, it's those first followers who "transform a
'lone nut' into a leader." I'm writing to you today to invite you to join
me<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=e9128e56ba&e=c7895a9537>
in doing something really nutty: post a photo or video of yourself singing
into a
carrot!<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=787678e125&e=c7895a9537>

We're calling this new campaign #carrotoke and using it as a way of raising
funds for and awareness of KGI's Sow It Forward mini-grants program which just
opened its online application's doors this
week<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=66e939a4aa&e=c7895a9537>
for its third annual round of grants. Over the past two years, Sow It Forward
has awarded 240 grants reaching 72,000 people in 25 countries who've gone on to
grow 120 tons of healthy food for themselves, their families and communities.
While we're proud of what we've accomplished, during that same 2 year period,
there were over 1500 projects proposed that we were not able to help due to a
lack of funds.

I think it's time that we try something fun and out of the box that, were it to
catch on, could allow us to grow more of our own funds and issue more grants.
So, here's my 3-part request:

 1. that you post a photo or video of yourself singing into a
carrot<http://kgi.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=034033ec0c&e=c7895a9537>
 2. that you invite/cajole/convince/tag 3 other people from your online
network to follow your lead
 3. that you make a tax-deductible donation to KGI in support of Sow It
Forward<http://kgi.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=ed690cfa54&e=c7895a9537>
Whether #carrotoke becomes a cheery chorus capable of funding hundreds of new
food gardens or remains the work of a lone nut (me!) singing off in a dark
corner of the
internet<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=df68668049&e=c7895a9537>
depends not only on my leadership but also yours. I hope you'll agree to sing
along. You never know who might hear and decide to join us!

Thanks so much,

Roger Doiron
Weeder-in-Chief, KGI

PS: #carrotoke isn't just a people-powered campaign, it's also a contest where
we'll be giving away over $1000 worth of cool stuff, most of it to
randomly-selected winners and a $500 Gardeners Supply Co. gift card to the best
video based on our judging and voting. We'll be randomly picking our first $100
Gardeners Supply Co. gift card winner at 5pm Eastern time this Sunday,
September 28th. Be sure to have your photo or video uploaded
here<http://kgi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b0ca4b64558ef6c805814e19&id=96cfdd2801&e=c7895a9537>
by then if you want to be in the running.
