Every now and then, I feel the need to blow off steam, and since this
seems like a good place to do so...
I am really tired at how the PC world has become so darn obsolescence
inducing. Daily, I see machines simply being dumped because "they aren't
current". Now, with Windows XP being introduced, even 500 mHz is
considered slow. MicroSoft has made keeping up with the Joneses the order
of the day.
I remember, not so very long ago (geologically), that everybody was
consumed with recycling. Many areas still are. Recycling PC's is a task
that simply isn't going to happen. Even donating these machines to many
thrift stores or other charitable organizations isn't a guarantee that
they'll be used. Recently, a nearby thrift store was forced to throw away
many good computers, and not just PC's. There were Mac's in that
dumpster; IIfx's, a Classic, and a Quadra. I could only salvage a lone
Mac monitor, for in their haste to rid themselves of this "junk", they
simply tossed (tossed!) these computers one on top of the other, pretty
much smashing the Classic's CRT and every other Mac case. The only other
computer that was salvageable was a lone IBM PS/2 Model 55 SX. Why
couldn't they be sold, even though they were marked all the way down to
$1 a piece? Because, according to the store manager, they were just
obsolete. I asked her why, and she proceeded to tell me that the fella
who comes in to repair the machines told her that the older PC's (486 and
slower) and the Macs weren't Y2K compliant. And this is what he was
telling all of the customers...
What a bloody waste!
On the upside, it certainly makes for increasing ones collection easy...
