Is there a prepackaged BSD/Linux archive somewhere for this purpose.

I'd like to use Linux on the se30 or even BSD, but the time to configure etc is 
prohibitive if you have not done this before.
( I have'nt)

Software firewalls are junk.

Unless you want to dedicate the SE/30 *exclusively* to firewall duty, you
should avoid running firewall software on it.  (A software-based firewall
running on a dedicated machine, as Tyler describes, is an acceptable
substitute for a hardware firewall in most cases.)  In order to do this,
however, you'll pretty much *have* to use NetBSD or something similar.
