A powerbook logic board will solve both of these problems, though it will introduce it's own host of problems with wiring. It should run happily without a LCD attached, though, and it's got the battery capability and the serial port, and the size (if you orient it right and pick the right 'book to carve up). The Duo motherboards are really quite small in two of their dimensions (about 1/2"x4"x10" or so), and it's probably light enough that you could have a hard drive in there too, for booting and such. If you're a UNIX hacker you could make it a UNIX MacMissile with NetBSD for safety's sake, as you could set it up with wireless serial connectivity and log into it on console wirelessly for debugging even on the launch pad! If you diddn't intend to use UNIX but MacOS, you could do one better by using a 190 Mobo with a 32 or 64MB compactflash in the PCMCIA slot to boot from. You wouldn't have to worry about spinning it down before launch: much more durable. the 190 mobos are pretty small, too.
