I am the recipient of some very inappropriate language, off list of course,
from you, Chris, that you wouldn't have the courage to say in public when I
asked you NOT to put the new listers at risk of disappearing from trite,
unfriendly replies to what to them is a simple question.

I don't EVER want to believe that this list is only about wasting bandwidth
and people who already know these seemingly idiotic questions.

And there's no room here for the knowledge challenged? I guess I had a
different view when I joined four years ago.

If the list is only for those in-the-know, it's changed. And I'm worried for
Dan Knight. No one joins or stays in a list of elitists. They tire of being
put down for the lack of knowledge. And they unsub. And the advertisers
won't pay for a low-hit site.

When I joined, there were friendly, gentle listers who answered all my
questions with grace and informativeness. I STILL answer newbie questions
with that kind of patience.

I'm brain damaged. I have to relearn most of my knowledge base again and
again just to keep it in. By causation, I'm patient with dumb questions.

But, now I feel irrelevant. I'm supposed to be snotty, reserved and elite
because I know something? And flush newbies to the FAQ for EVERY question?

I'll never be like that. I may have no place on this list, then. I'll be one
less member for the advertisers to justify spending money here. I won't be a
part of anything meanspirited. The people who are new join to learn, not to
be straight-armed into silence. There are many on this list who DO the great
job of aiding the newbies. THEY are prized and rare.

And I enjoy their responses, because I KNOW the newbie's getting help, and
the old Macs are getting the longer, more useful life they
deserve. People on this list DO great things to promote Old Macs. And some
seem bent on laying them to rest. Taking all the good along with them when
they do.

Vern gets to keep asking those many questions. I enjoy watching his
progress. I know how damned hard mine has been. Bill gets to keep writing
novels for answers. And all those characters who I so enjoy get to STAY PUT,
doing what they do that makes this list great to read every morning.

I despise sterile. Sterile is a hospital. I like the messy, misspelled,
lengthy and painful-to-read HUMAN entries. If that gets suppressed to save
bandwidth, then I'M going to depart before it makes it too difficult for me
to keep learning. Your FAQ isn't where I learned most of what I've managed
to retain. I got it by printing those clear, human answers from folks who
are truly humble of their awesome knowledge. The ones who can teach, not
discourage.
