Another possibility comes from the plastic modeling hobby. Look for a
product called "Easy-Lift-Off" from a company called Floquil-Polly S
Color Corp. One can find it in the paint department of most
trains-planes-and-automobiles hobby shops. It is designed for removing
unwanted "coatings" from plastic models without damaging the plastic or
destroying the detail. I've not used it on any Apple plastics, but I've
used it on styrene with both commercial and home-applied coatings,
including water-based acrylic model paints, with great success. YMMV

No matter how paranoid you are, it isn't paranoid enough.
