Yo compacters everywhere, The subject of the cleaning of a compact case has returned with a twist this time. The idea of putting it out to bleach in the sun is creative but futile. Jeff Garrison, our resident case cleaning scientist, says it best:
>The only thing that putting Mac cases in the sun for a few weeks will do >is turn them nearly orange. > >Bleach is essential to bringing the original tone back. Jeff is absolutely correct here. The Mac case, like most plastics, is quite photosensitive quickly yellowing (oranging?) in the sunlight. If you have an already slightly yellowed case with light areas as from under removed stickers or ink, you can even out the yellowing a bit by placing your compact in the sun. Perhaps a severely yellowed case becomes a candidate for painting ala Tracy Keirns. Sending all plastic parts of any compact Mac case through a very high temperature commercial dishwasher is wholly safe. I do it with every Mac I disassemble at the senior center. All of the case parts go through the lunchroom dishwasher without issue. My EMI tester is my very cheap benchtop radio sitting not three inches (6 cm) from where the Mac sits on the bench. It is useful hearing the different EMI noises, especially external SCSI devices, from the Macs over a background of jazz. There is no shift in noise after a run through the dishwasher. In my thriftshopping, I often find dead compacts in beautiful unblemished cases. The working innards from a yellowed or broken case go into this beautiful case. The rest become salvage parts. And the worst of cases receive a Viking's farewell. Even very bad cases can have an afterlife. They are great for transporting or storing automobile alternators, tulip bulbs, or other awkward stuff.
