Because producing text and page layout on a Mac takes
less resources than a decent version of Swoop. What I
find so odd -- inspired by the above and the
conversations with Stuart -- is how newspapers have
actually underutilized the Mac and the software. It's
rare that they (as a category; of course there are
exceptions) really push the form. They usually just
pick a style and stay with it. In the days of hand
setting type, this was understandable. But the mindset
has never changed. Print heads (those that produce
fiberware, not what you find on an HP), are a rigid
bunch. Computers have revolutionized other media but
the newspaper crew has never used them for appearance
of the end-product but only for the production of it.
