The LaserJet network interface for the 4M+ and later HPs is auto sensing and will allow you to use the same printer from parallel, serial, ethernet or Localtalk interfaces without user interaction at the printer. The only driver you need is the standard Apple LaserWriter driver. For the System 6 Macs, make sure you are using the "modern" driver provided on the System 6.0.7 or later distribution (this is also the driver that shipped with System 7). The older system software distros include the LaserWriter Prep file so they are easily identified. If you use an older version of LW driver, you will need to reset the printer when printing from Macs running the "modern" and old versions. I have never observed problems when using Macs running LW 8 in conjunction Macs running the System 7/System 6.0.7 driver. > 2. Just make sure that you have the "modern" driver on all of your Macs. If printing the same document from Macs running different versions of the LW driver, expect to see differences in line lengths and kerning so be careful; this problem is less likely to occur with (mainly non-compact) Macs running different versions of LW8.
