Jumping in this thread late, my husband has a HP IIIp he uses with his PC.
It does not have postscript. (We too were fooled by the "p" when we bought
it at Boeing Surplus, at least it was cheap!). I was later told that the
regular HP III is a huge office printer compared to the IIIp (personal)
small desktop model. It has both a parallel and serial port, but the serial
port is not like the Macs (round, 8 pins)--it's long and flat,
(::::::::::::.) just a tad bit shorter than the parallel port.

As for working on a Mac, I was able to use the IIIp with PowerPrint, the
software that gives you PC drivers and the cable that converts from PC
Parallel to Mac Serial. It works but the pages can't be too complicated and
it's pretty slow. I'd hold out for a PostScript printer instead.
