Hi everyone! Well, I got the case open and I have multimeter in hand. The patient looks pretty bad but since I have no experience with how it should look I thought I'd run it past you all.
There are multiple burn marks on the jacket -- according to Pina's Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets that is a bad sign. Of course, I suppose this set could have been damaged & fixed in the past. I adjusted the voltage pot to 5.00 but that does not seem to have helped. I guess that means it is a component problem? I have not tested the components one by one yet. However, several of the components are surrounded by what looks like melted wax, is that a sign that they are fried or is it some kind of strange soldering compound I'm not familiar with? The bits with "melted wax" do not necessarily correspond to the burned spots. It is very confusing trying to visually inspect the board when I'm not sure what it should look like! So, is it time to give up & go looking on ebay for a new board? Thanks for any advice! Sara -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
