Hot glue tends to not matter much if you use a decent soldering iron.
15-year-old hot glue tends to matter even less - it's usually pretty brittle.

Your local community college's intro electronics classes.  Seriously.  Should
be about $100 or so and you'll learn WAY more there than you'll ever get from
books.

Given that parts list, Digi-Key can supply about 90% of it right off and can
recommend modern (read: non-obsolete) substitutions for the other 10%.
