Yo compacters everywhere, Our Ken, aka res0bznj <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, futzing with his Color Classic sez:
<<... and didn't want to cut up the panel from my 575 (it too has a nice Trinitron screen - wish Apple had stuck with them!). Also, for a conversation piece, sitting on the kitchen counter, a "stock" machine fits the bill!>> Here! Here! While chopping up a perfectly good 575 may be okay if your need is to up your Color Classic to a Mystic or better, there is a simpler and less distructive way to perk up the lackluster performance of a Color Classic. The motherboard from a 520 or a 550 swaps right into a Color Classic without issue. And 520s or 550s are both cheap and no big loss to the world of surplus Macs. With the 520 or 550 'board, you will achive a 32 bit data path vs the Color Classic's 16 bit data path, a faster 030 processor and bus speed (25 or 33 MHz vs the CCs 16 MHz), and a 72 pin RAM slot good for a maximum 36 MB of RAM vs the CCs 10 MB RAM maximum. All in all, these 520 or 550 'boards are 3 to 4 times quicker than the stock CC 'board and give your Color Classic sufficient power and RAM to stroll about the web or do some decent graphics work. The 550 'board is the very board also used in the coveted Color Classic II. Swapping in a 550 'board gives you such a (virtual) Color Classic II with none of the fruitless search at a bazillionth of the price. You can pencil in your own "II" on the faceplate if it is that important. Please, let us not tear up perfectly good and wonderfully capable 575s unless we really need to.
