What tray-load CD drive(s) fit the Performa 550? It has the grey adapter you plug into the back of the drive.
I can't remember how fast the later Apple SCSI drives were. I remember my old 7500 drive was 4x, but perhaps there were some 8x versions later on - I dunno. Maybe someone else can pipe in here. As you found out - only SCSI drives will work - ATAPI will not.
Also I would like to upgrade the mobo with the Sonnet Presto Plus or other
mobo upgrade, change to a larger HD (how big can you go?) and max the
memory. Curious to know if this mobo

is the Sonnet Presto Plus mentioned above? I am particularly interested in
having the Ethernet so I can hook to my DSL modem!! If it is I want to grab
it if it's what I need. Anybody have any experience with this upgrade on
their machine? Is it pretty much plug & play, or is there much config to do?

The quick cheap upgrade for your 550 is an LC 575 motherboard upgrade, which is exactly what you're looking at in that auction. It does not have ethernet built in though - you'll have to find a card for it.
Personally, by the time you get a tray loading CD-ROM drive, a new front bezel, and a new motherboard for your 550, you'll probably have spent more money than if you were to just buy a regular LC 575! I'd leave the 550 as it is, buy a 575 - then you'll have two of these bad boy LC's!
Of course, it's this kind of thinking that leads to this addiction known as Mac collecting! =)
