Well, I'm not so sure. Chances are there originally was a working system on
the HD in this Classic (AFAIK there were no Classics shipped sans HD, the
minimum was a 40MB, but it could have been removed by a previous owner),
but maybe the internal SCSI cable or its contacts or the SCSI chip on the
mobo have gone south so the machine doesn't find its HD and gives you this
nice FD/question mark icon. What happens acoustically when you fire your
Classic up - after the bong, do you hear anything at all except for the
fan? Do you hear a HD spinning up, whirring, being accessed? If yes, crack
the case and look after the contacts and  cables. If no, it could still be
a disconnection of the power supply cable to the HD. Don't give up, get
yourself a long Torx 15 and have a look!
