If it doesn't show a hard disk in the desktop, then probably there is no hard disk, or it's broken or completely erased. Some basic Classics shipped without hard drive. It's strange to have 2 Mb and no hard drive (AFAIK the standard configs were 1 Mb RAM w/o HD, and 2 Mb RAM with 40 Mb HD), but it can be an upgrade made by the previous owner.
You can tell if there is a hard disk by hearing the beast while it's starting. When you power it on, you should hear two different noises (appart form the speaker "bong", of course): a louder one (the case's fan), and a quieter one (the hard disk spinning-up sound), followed by a "traka-traka-traka-traka" (the hard disk heads moving from one end of the disk to the other as it initianizes itself). But the only way to be sure is cracking the beast open - you may have a non-working hard drive, or even a wire may be loosened while moving the Classic from one place to another.
