You *can* connect two modems together, but not for internet.  I've never
done it before, but I saw a page a couple years back on how to share
files between an iMac and an old non-ethernet eqipped Mac.  The way to
do it is using the Communications tool on both machines in AppleWorks or
ClarisWorks.  You can only send one file at a time, so this would not
work for your scenario.
