This method does not work for a long time. When I got my Mac II (my first Mac with an 800k drive), I tried this method, and no less than 10 minutes later, the disk didn't work.
Do not use this method for backups or for any important data you may need. (You can try it - it won't hurt.)

I'm thinking that if you use an older os you take any floppy and format it.

For what its worth alway use a fresh disk is you must cover the hole. The macs floppy drives are gutless compared to just about anything else making this method less than ideal. 400k support was dropped after 7.6 0r 7.5.5, Diskdup is a useful tool, unlike some.
