Hmmm ... A PC emulator running on a PC, that needs PC hardware? -- I don't get it. Actually, the 128k "Plus" ROMs eat into your 512k RAM the same way an INIT would, which is why they are not recommended for a 128k (the HD20 INIT won't even load on a 128k) -- it's worse actually because it's also loading info about SCSI, etc. that the 512k doesn't need and can't use (without 3rd party add-ons). Yes, the built-in AppleShare file sharing under System 7 works fine, but it's no different than any other workstation client. If you were running an AppleShare server on your SE/30 (I bought my AS v2.0 for around $10 off eBay), then it wouldn't matter what OS you were running on the 512ke (you'd really be pushing it to run System 7 and you'd have to omit most of 7's features to get it to load, even with a hard drive). Basically your VMWare would talk to the SE like another server and even though NT doesn't recognize System 6 or earlier AppleShare, the AppleShare Server on the SE/30 running System 7 will translate from any other version of AppleShare accessing it. So, IMHO, you should turn the SE/30 into an AppleShare file server to link your vintage Macs running System software appropriate to the computer's resources, then you'll have complete access between all your computers.

VMWare? Is that like Virtual PC? What hardware do you run it on, the G5? So unlike the OS9 emulation under OSX, the VMWare uses its own protocols outside the OSX environment (according to VMWare website, they don't support Mac OSX)?

Seems like overkill to run System 6 on your 512k -- that can't leave RAM for much else. Does System 6 include the HD20 INIT, or do you have to add the INIT (I know System 6 officially does not support the HD 20 itself).

Since the 512k talks to the SE, you should be able to run any AppleShare aware system. If the SE/30 is running the server application, then you should be able to talk directly to your G5 vis-a-vis the otherwise compatible servers.
>> I'm using AppleShare from 7.0 It's works fine between my SE/30 Plus and 512K. For some reason the 512K can't see the NT v4 server although both the Plus and SE/30 can so I guess you need 7.0 at least to connect. I did a quick look on the web and found some evidence that this is the case in practice although it's not what the Microsoft website claims.
