For playing Audio CD's with an Apple External CD Drive - I have always connected my Apple Power Speakers to the Audio Output of the CD Drive & used the Apple Audio CD Player from within the Apple MacOS.
I not heard of playing Audio CD's through the Internal Speaker of an Apple Macintosh, I always thought that the internal speaker had been reserved for beeps for error messages, etc. Hope this Helps.
