Thanks for rushing to my defense, Stuart. However, he is right ... this is a
semantic issue that has been discussed here before. BUT, it must be taken in
context -- we were talking about the SE showing up on the AppleTalk bus of a
network computer. An SE is NOT a LaserWriter. So the broad term AppleTalk
should have been taken to mean AppleShare (Much the same way we incorrectly
use the term Buffalo and Bison interchangeably, yet know what we mean
anyway). But I will be more diligent in the future, now that I know
ball-busters are "lurking" :-). And yes, there are all kinds of things one
can do to make OSX and earlier Systems AppleShare compatible, but for
someone just using stock software, they need to know what to expect without
the add-ons in order to solve an immediate problem. It deserves mention here
that Stock System 6 and earlier will not show up or be accessible on
networks unless they are using server software (they can only access another
volume w/stock software). System 7 was the first to incorporate personal
file sharing in the stock configuration that allowed two-way volume access.
For whatever reason I have never been able to get System 7 to show up under
OSX, or see the OSX server, much less access it, from System 7 machines.
Then again, I have not tried really hard to find the problem as I have an
OS9 server to act as intermediary. I fear I may have overstepped my
knowledge by suggesting this as a possible problem for the SE not showing up
on the network, but certainly the guy who originally had the problem will
now have enough information to solve the next problem with OSX once he gets
the SE up and going. Finally, not as a criticism, but new users in
particular tend to post limited info without realizing how complex the
issues might be. So until I know what kind of network a person is using, I
tend to briefly throw out whatever idea has not been suggested by others as
a solution so that the person needing help can give us a better picture,
like: "I'm not using OSX at all" which elements a set of issues which may be
affecting if not responsible for the problems. And now look, I've gone into
a whole dissertation which may not even have addressed the SE guy's problem
(I forgot who originally started this thread and haven't really seen any
responses from him since the help-gates opened).
