The 8-pin mini to DB-9 null cable worked with the 8-9 Teleport modem cable using Z-Term. The Color Classic is now managing a classic Sun workstation. In fact, this box will support Solaris 9 (probably will have to use 16Mb SIMMs). This is what Sun has for the 8-pin serial pinouts:
1 - DTR
2 - TXC
3 - TD
4 - GND
5 - RD
6 - RTS
7 - DCD
8 - RXC

The IPC has a jumper to switch from RS-232 to RS-423. Anyway, the IPC (with 36MB RAM) will be fun to play with. Alternatively, the box is a nice one for a Mac hack like a 575 or Gazelle board.

The IPC has an 8-pin mini DIN similar to the Mac. In fact the pin-outs appear to be the same. I had read about the different printer cables which prompted my question since I've got a spaghetti bowl full of cables. I have a 8-pin to DB-9 which works as a null modem (for a PC)...would another 8-pin to DB-9 (properly gendered) like a Teleport modem cable work?

If the pin-outs for the MiniDIN on the Sparc are actually the same the ApplePrinter cable ought to work but are they REALLY the same. I can imagine SUN using a MiniDIN 8 but I cannot imagine Sun using RS422 balanced signals the way Apple did.

Does anyone here know for sure? It is possible to damage an Apple RS422 port by connecting it improperly to a real RS232 port which can have signals above 25 volts.

The MiniDIN to DB9 (IBM RS232) connection uses the capability of the Mac RS422 port to connect to most RS232 ports by using just the RxT- and TxD- signals. Global Village modems had that kind of connection which reverses the usage of pins 2 and 3 from the 25 pin standard. That would work only if the Sun port is actually RS232 and, with a MiniDIN 8 connector, a non-standard implementation of RS232.

We need more than "appear to be the same" for the Sun pinout. Some part numbers for the Sun box that can be Googled? Someone here who knows? "Sparc" and "IPC" are not enough. It's the kind of data that would have been provided in the user instructions from Sun.
