I use OS 8.1 on my color classic with 575 motherboard. It doesn't require any enablers, but since I didn't do the hardware 640 resolution hack, I did have to edit the system file in 8.1 to get the correct 512x384 and 560x384 resolutions for the color classic monitor.

The way I installed it originally, was to leave the 575 board in the performa 575 system it came from, then install 8.1, hack the system file with resedit (instructions on how to do it are online), then put the 575 hard disk and motherboard in the color classic. It booted the first time with no errors and works perfectly in the color classic since then.

I don't know about 7.6.1, but installing 8.1 if you don't have a 575 system also, is tricky. I think you would have to use another mac, use 'wish I were' to change the gestalt ID to match a LC or performa 575, install 8.1, hack the system file for the screen resolution, then put the hard disk/motherboard in the color classic. There may be easier ways to do it, but I can't think of any offhand.

Stuart,

You are most kind. The older sites I visited are no longer in business; the links went to Japan but the pages were gone.
Perhaps Apple got after them.

A note on the list of system enablers on Apples website reads that no enablers are required after System 7.5.3
since they developed a universal enabler.

I think you can see why I am confused.
