The build of the companion cd does NOT require /usr/local.   I build the
companion daily on systems with no /usr/local.  In the top build, there 
is a patch that installs top in /opt/sfw/bin, not /usr/local/bin.

I would need to have more details about the steps you did to do the 
build exactly, what level of opensolaris you are using, what companion
packages you installed prior to the build etc.
