I have the same problem. I mostly use two monitors so I really don't need more 
than one workspace.
@David: Ignoring the extra workspaces would do, but Ubuntu moves windows 
automatically to another workspace if it thinks the current one is too full. Do 
you know a way to change that behaviour?
